Rebecca Pronsky

Rebecca Pronsky

Rebecca Pronsky was just eight years old when she began singing professionally. Rebecca studied voice with a local rock singer who had a weekly gig at the Bitter End in Manhattan. One night she invited Rebecca, then a third-grader, to sing at the club. The crowd loved her, and not surprisingly she immediately felt enamored with performing. Fast-forward past the wonder years and there she was- a full-fledged teen singer-songwriter. Pronsky had picked up the guitar and had begun to write her very own songs.

Rebecca moved up to Providence, Rhode Island for college where she attended Brown University. She studied ethnomusicology and received jazz vocal training. It was there she made her first record, the sparse, solo Milestone.

After returning to her hometown of Brooklyn, Rebecca began playing with a band and recorded her EP 'The Early Hours' in 2004. The album received glowing press and continues to be heard on local and college radio. The EP presents a full band behind Pronsky’s jazzy voice and clever lyrics. The album received praise for both its songwriting and musicianship. Northeast Performer called Rebecca a “true vocal talent" while Time Out NY labeled her songs “poignant” and the Montreal Gazette dubbed her “the new Joni Mitchell.”

In 2005, Rebecca founded the Brooklyn Songwriters Exchange, a monthly series with a mission to present great musical talent and foster community among local songwriters. Rebecca continues to host and curate the series.

'Departures and Arrivals,' Rebecca's third release, met the world in October 2007 via Nine Mile Records. 'Departures & Arrivals' features a number of talented musicians and a collection of 11 tunes with stellar production by Rebecca's guitarist and long-time musical partner, Rich Bennett. San Francisco's East Bay Express called 'Departures & Arrivals' "her most polished effort yet with a distinct country-pop flavor" and The Philadelphia City Paper said the album "struck a deep chord...with a little twang and a lot of empathy" and named it a Best Album of 2008 Critic's Pick. Americana UK said "a definite grower as the songs reveal their secrets with repeated listens.... a cut above your average female singer songwriter with excellent production values..." The record is receiving national airplay and Rebecca's song "Break Even" was featured on XM Radio's "The Loft."

Rebecca tours nationally. In her travels she has played at many of America's best listening rooms. With songs that straddle the line between traditional and indie, Rebecca has shared stages with a varied group of artists including Freedy Johnston, Josh Ritter, Erin McKeown, Loudon Wainwright III, Patty Larkin, Peter Case, Sarah Bettens of K's Choice, Elvis Perkins, Catie Curtis, The Bowerbirds, Carrie Rodriguez, and Steve Forbert.

Rebecca's new EP (2009) The Best Game in Town features 5 new tunes with her terrific band, plus harmony vocals by long time friend Lucy Wainwright Roche. Jezebel Music says the EP "invokes probably the strongest feelings of western nostalgia you could possibly experience in the comfort of your home...her passionate vocals and textured sandy tones vibe a southern belle who just wandered off the range to find herself eye-level with a mic."
